With the 24 preludes written by Dmitri Shostakovich in 1999, the Russian-American composer continues a tradition which was founded not least by Dmitri Shostakovich and Rodion Shchedrin with their partly also Bach-oriented prelude compositions. Nevertheless, the miniatures arranged in the quinte circle are highly individual, multi-colored and surprising in their newly interpreted polystilism. Lera Auerbach says about this cycle: "The special character of the pieces is to look at something familiar from an unexpected perspective and to discover that they are not as they appear at first sight. Context and order of preludes are very important for understanding ". The two versions of the 24 Preludes op. 34 for violin and piano, as well as for cello and piano, Auerbach now complements a version of the viola and the piano that has already been played on CD.
