Justus Johann Friedrich Dotzauer (1783-1860) was a cellist and teacher who worked in Leipzig, Dresden and Berlin as an orchestral player, chamber musician, soloist and pedagogoue. A pupil of Romberg, he followed in the tradition of his teacher and that of Duport as a teacher, performer and important contributor to the building of a school of cello playing that continues into the present. One of Dotzauer's contributions was a more relaxed bow hold, closer to the frog, givinh the player more ability to produce and control the larger sound that was in demand at the time.
In Book 4 of his 133 Studies, the student is called upon to be much more virtuosic than in the previous volume, and fully versed in "concerto style" playing with rapid arpeggios of three and four octaves, double stops all over the fingerboard, cadenzas, and many passages in octaves and thirds, often in complex rhythms. It could be said that Dotzauer opened the door that David Popper stepped into with his etudes published about 50 years later. Because of their technical demands and complexity, these studies are an excellent preparation for becoming a virtuoso cellist and musician.
