Anne Danican-Philidor belonged to a family which was highly respected in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Philidor is a surname that is said to have been granted to one of the oldest members of this family by Louis XIII or XIV, in memory of an Italian oboist by the name of Filidori.

Anne was born in Paris on 11 April 1681. He is known as the composer of several pastoral operas and of spirited instrumental music, but principally, he is known as the founder of the Paris "Concerts spirituels" (1725). He died a highly esteemed man on 8 October 1728.

The present "SONATA pour la Flute a bec" is taken from a volume which appeared in Paris in 1712. With the exception of minor corrections, the text of this edition follows the first edition that was used as a model (copy in the possession of the Bibliothèque Nationale de Paris).
