Anne Bonny was an infamous woman pirate in the early years of the 18½th Century. She cut a wide swath from the Carolina shore through the Caribbean and the West Indies to Lake Maracaibo on the Venezuelan coast.Born in Ireland about 1698, Anne was brought to the Carolinas by her father who was fleeing a family scandal. As a young woman, Anne defied the norms of polite society and was drawn to the lawless world of piracy. Anne was married at a young age to James Bonny with whom she moved to the Island of New Providence in the Bahamas. James Bonny, though a thoroughly unscrupulous fellow, proved no equal to the adventurous Anne, and she soon left him to join the pirate crew of Calico Jack Rackham. Disguised as a man, Anne Bonny became one of the most feared pirates along the Spanish Main.In November 1720, when their stolen ship William was overtaken by the British Navy, Calico Jack and the male crew meekly surrendered leaving Anne Bonny and another female pirate, Mary Read, to fight on alone. After her capture, Anne was given permission to see Calico Jack in prison before his hanging, and she is reported to have said, Had you fought like a man, you need not have been hanged like a dog. Though she was arrested and jailed at that time, there is no record of what happened to Anne Bonny - there are only rumors.
