Edited by Miloslav Gajdos, the leading Gregora expert, this short and energetic scherzo offers interesting repertoire for the intermediate bassist. There are musical and technical challenges, in bass clef throughout, with a lively and supportive accompaniment. Frantisek Gregora (1819-1 887) was a prolific composer of music for double bass, and this is idealfor both concert and educational use. About Grade 7 standard, there are some easy double stops in the extended solo cadenza, ending with a fast and energetic final flourish. _________________________________________ ________________________ 'Gregora was an almost exact contemporary of Bottesini, wrote a wealth of music for the bass, but alas we don't hear much of it these days. So it's a pleasure to discover this charming Scherzo in B flat major, which would make an excellent shorter item in an intermediate recital. Lying within the orchestral register, and marked tempo di polka, it is lively and tuneful. Miloslav Gajdos has revised the work for this edition which has a written out cadenza which is playable and sonorous. Gregora's output includes a number of sacred works plus chamber and orchestral repertoire. Perhaps it is time for a Gregora renaissance; this work is a good start.'
