Joseph Haydn's so-called Paris Symphonies were written in 1785 and 1786 for the Parisian Masonic lodge Socit Olympique, which entertained a large orchestra and held regular concerts. Artful motivic work and playful wit characterize the six works, in which Haydn pays tribute to the sophisticated taste of the Parisian audience and the excellent skills of the musicians. Through print editions in Paris, Vienna and London, the six symphonies quickly became known and loved throughout Europe. The Symphony 83, the only work in a minor key among the Parisian symphonies, did not get its epithet "La Poule" (The Hen) by Haydn. If one hears the objection of the oboe in the secondary theme of the first movement, this association is, however, literally obtrusive. The study edition adopts the musical text of the Haydn Complete Edition and thus guarantees the highest scientific quality.
